Dr. Demento – a Comedy Music Original
May 8, 2006 09:14
By Kent Johnson Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past 30 years, you’ve probably heard the name Dr. Demento, even if you’ve never heard the Good Doctor’s radio show (or maybe you thought he was a practicing physician?).
Anyway, Dr. Demento is host of his own weekly-syndicated and wildly popular radio show, appropriately-named "The Dr. Demento Show." On the air for over 35 years, Dr. Demento has describes his show as "Mad music and crazy comedy from out of the archives and off the wall. Rare records and outrageous tapes from yesterday, today, and tomorrow." The Dr. Demento show is heard on over 200 radio stations in the U.S., and is carried abroad on the Armed Forces Radio Network. Legend has it that the show got its name when Barry Hanson (aka Dr. Demento) was playing "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus on the radio one day, and someone said, "You've gotta be demented to play that!" Soon after that, the DJ before him announced, "And now, ladies and gentlemen, here's Dr. Demento!", and the name stuck. The show has been wildly popular ever since. In fact, Dr. Demento is credited with making Weird Al Yankovic a household name. "Weird Al" had songs aired on The Dr. Demento Show eight years before he became world famous with the Micheal Jackson parody "Eat It.” At one time he had the most requested song of all time on the show ("Another One Rides The Bus"), and is still the most requested artist. Wayne Faust Schedule Update 5/19/06
May 20, 2006 05:54
NEW Sven Travels The World Pics! Guess where Sven is and WIN A FREE CD! I had a great trip all the way down to Key West this spring, putting 5000 miles on my brand new Suzuki wagon. As always, everyone treated me with amazing kindness and hospitality. Thanks to my good friends Bob and Doris (Bald Guy Bob Ferry, the oldest ski instructor in Summit County), who showed me their habitat in Fort Meyers Beach and took me out on one of their boats. Also, special thanks to Lyle and Rhonda in New Orleans, who took me on a whirlwind tour of the hurricane damage, both by car and from the air. My heart and good wishes go out to all those who were devastated by Katrina, and are still digging out.
The shows went great in all the places I went - Nebraska, Louisiana, and Florida. We had lots of folks from the Tampa Bay area, and from as far away as Chicago at the show in Dunedin, and several people from places as far away as Ohio made the trip down to Sloppy's in Key West for the shows. I hope to get back down that way in the fall. Stay tuned for more dates this summer, including possible dates in Michigan, Ohio, and/or England. Some of my CD's are now available for download at Apple I-Tunes. Go to my CD page to see which ones. And one more VERY important note: My wife and I just became grandparents! My oldest son, Stephen, and his wife had a baby boy on Mother's Day. Also, my other son, Paul will be getting married in Virginia in June, so there are less shows and more good family stuff next month. Now, I know you're thinking I must be pretty old because I'm a grandfather. My wife and I had Stephen when we were 4 years old, so we're not actually old geezers. Really.
